چکیده

Although once considered to be at the margins of psychological science, the study of culture has blossomed into one of the most important areas of research today. Studies involving cultural variables appear more frequently than ever before in mainstream journals in developmental, clinical, personality, and social psychology, aswell as in specialty journals such as the Journal of Cross-Cultural Psychology, Culture and Psychology, International Journal of Intercultural Relations, and the Journal of Cross Cultural Management (van de Vijver, 2006). Theorists are also increasingly incorporating culture as an important variable into their theories and models of psychological processes. The methodological backbone spurring the blossoming of cultural science in psychology is cross-cultural research, in which two or more cultural groups are compared on psychological variables of interest. This is true regardless of the theoretical approach or perspective one adopts in understanding cultural influences on mind and behavior. For instance, methodological differences used to exist between those who called themselves cross-cultural psychologists versus those who called themselves cultural psychologists, with the former basing most of their work on cross-cultural comparisonand the latter arguing that such comparisonswereunwarranted, unjustified, andunnecessary (Greenfield, 1997; Shweder, 1999).Today, however, even those who call themselves cultural psychologists clearly use crosscultural research methods as the method of choice in conducting research (e.g., Heine et al., 2001; Kitayama, Mesquita, & Karasawa, 2006; Markus, Uchida, Omoregie, Townsend, & Kitayama, 2006). Indeed, there are many potentials and advantages that cross-cultural comparisons afford. They test the boundaries of knowledge and stretch the

Methodological Issues in MIS Cross-Cultural Research

This chapter presents a discussion of methodological issues that are relevant and idiosyncratic to cross-cultural research. One characteristic that typifies cross-cultural studies is their comparative nature, i.e., they involve a comparison across two separate cultures on a focal phenomenon. When differences across cultures are observed, the question arises as to whether the results are true cu...

Methodological issues in cross-cultural and interdisciplinary research on sustainable development

One of the perspectives is to understand and place sustainable development within broader picture of globalization and paradigm shift. As long as we ‘neatly’ divide education, sustainable development and politics we can discuss them as separate ‘fields’ of work. Globalization is associated with processes, such as internationalization, international relationships, unification and diversity, loca...

Cross-Cultural Research and Qualitative Inquiry

Cross-cultural research has become important in this postmodern world where many people have been made, and are still, marginalised and vulnerable by others in more powerful positions like colonial researchers. In this paper, I contend that qualitative research is particularly appropriate for cross-cultural research because it allows us to find answers which are more relevant to the research pa...

Positivism and Constructivism : Two opposite but Reconcilable Paradigms In

Cross-cultural research is marked by adopting one of two dominant epistemological paradigms: positivism or constructivism. By discussing strengths/weaknesses inherent in each paradigm, this paper argues that rather than contradictory and incommensurable; positivism and constructivism can be considered complementary epistemological orientations which correspond to two conceptual levels of cultur...

The Economics of Generosity and Methodological Individualism

Development economists have superseded any necessity of using Arrow’s methodological individualism (MI) in focusing on cross-cultural, cross-national, or developmental economics. This study examines whether analysis of cross-cultural economic models might include a concept of economic generosity as a type of economic structuration that deviates from MI principles and is closer to what economist...
